Spring Accessorizing

Although the past winter has been mild—I only broke out my thermals maybe five or so times the entire season—it was still like every other winter that has passed: Black, brown, dark blue, and charcoal clothes were in heavy rotation. Now that the thermometer has slowly risen to fifty on a regular basis, I can slowly integrate the following five items.

Boat shoes, $29.95, H&M

It’s quite cold still to go barefoot with these, but regardless, they pair well with wool socks.

Bracelet, $195, DSquared2

It has that piled-on look that’s big nowadays, without having to mind them individually.

Sunglasses, $15.50, American Eagle Outfitters

Not-quite-hipster, but not-quite-mainstream, these Persol-style sunglasses complements an outfit worn at a free outdoor concert. Plus, if you do lose it, no biggie.

Compact umbrella, $12.90, Uniqlo

Stock up several of these umbrellas in your car, your gym bag, and your apartment, in anticipation of spring precipitation.

Weekend bag, $69.95, Gap

A roomy, functional bag would go with that brewery road trip you’ve been itching to do since last fall.

60 Second Style: Matt Czuchry

Matt Czuchry (say that five times fast) appears in the CBS show “The Good Wife.” Prior to that, he’s appeared in “Gilmore Girls,” “Friday Night Lights,” and “I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell.” Mr. Czuchry also lended his voice in a “Justice League Unlimited” episode, playing the part of Brainiac-5.

Matt’s photographed above attending 2011’s CBS Upfront event—where the network unveils its show offerings for the upcoming season. Besides the pants that need hemming, and the lopsided necktie, the look’s just right.

Blazer, AllSaints, $375

A blazer like this, with its thin lapels and single button is not meant to be worn in the morning. But you can definitely rock it at every single evening engagement you have.

Pants, Topman, $75

Slim fit, slant pockets, very safe gray—how can you go wrong?

Sweater, Gap, $79.95

Blue certainly looks great, but a neutral is more versatile.

Shirt, American Eagle Outfitters, $49.50

Leave the white dress shirt for the office, and opt for a western-style piece.

Tie, Robert Talbott, $140

No, I’m not a fan of the LA Lakers, but yellow is the natural complement to lilac.

Shoes, To Boot New York, $375

How handsome are these monkstraps? What’s more, even with slim jeans they look phenomenal.

Watch, Fossil, $145

When there’s a lot of things going on in your outfit, it makes sense to keep the accessories simple and to the point—but not boring. This watch’s two-tone finish gives it enough interest without fighting for attention.

60 Second Style, All Saints, American Eagle Outfitters, Billy Reid, Doc Martens, Men's Fashion, Miansai, Park and Bond, Styling, Zac Efron

60 Second Style: Zac Efron

Well played, Mr. Efron. This outfit would look just a tad sloppy to anyone but you.

Nah, just kidding.

Anyone can pull this off so long as the rules of proportion are followed: Slouchy cardigan, trim pants.

Cardigan, $88, Topman
Although it’s not as chunky as what Mr. Efron is wearing, still has enough looseness in it to evoke the ruggedness of the fall outdoors.

Denim shirt, $150, All Saints
Part of what makes this ensemble great is the masterful combination of fabrics. Had he opted for a white shirt, he would have looked like he’s wearing grandpa’s clothes without modernizing it.

Corduroy pants, $175, Billy Reid
Warmer than cotton trousers and a great in-between before you bring out your wool pants, these cords are both functional and with its brown color, versatile.

Boots, $115, Doc Martens
No questions here: These are the type of boots you would want to default to to keep your feet warm (and to help you navigate snowed city streets).

Bracelet, $60, Miansai
Necklace, $12.50, American Eagle Outfitters
The key to great accessorizing is to have them pick up a color from another piece in your outfit. The bracelet has the red of the cardigan and the blue of the shirt; while the necklace complements the pants.

60 Second Style: Matt Lanter

Matt Lanter attends the premiere of Breaking Dawn: Part 1.

Doesn’t this outfit feel a little too overly dressed down for a movie premiere? It’s as if he’s having coffee at a nearby Starbucks, and his publicist suddenly burst inside the café, demanding that he make himself ready to walk the red carpet.

Nothing wrong with what he’s wearing per se, but when the rest of the cast have dressed up (to varying degrees, but still I digress), what Mr. Lanter’s wearing makes him stand out—and not in a good way.

Sweater, $130, Fred Perry

Tie, $60, All Saints

Shirt, $125, Theory

I don’t like how the cuffs are folded, and I’m most certainly not a fan of the loosened tie. If you choose to go this route (and have to attend a red carpet premiere), fold the cuffs Italian-style, and fix your tie. Once the movie starts, by all means undo everything.

Sneakers, $70, Converse

Watch, $225, Bulova

Corduroy jeans, $39.50, American Eagle Outfitters

60 Second Style: Ryan Gosling

Mr. Gosling appears on the Jimmy Fallon show with his animal companion George wearing a casual-chic outfit. It doesn’t seem like a lot of though went on to it, admittedly, but Ryan’s such a good-looking guy that he instantly carried the entire thing without sweating.

Blazer, $129.90, Uniqlo
A menswear staple, a fitted blazer is the cornerstone of a guy’s wardrobe. It goes well with jeans or formal trousers (just don’t try and make it look like a suit), and even shorts. When you find a brand whose pieces fit you, stock up!

Pants, $39.90, Uniqlo
This is a modernized take on the fall must-buy: Absence of wales (the ridges in the fabric) and a slimmer fit. Once the temperature starts to go south, swap your linens for these and call it a day.

T-shirt, $32.00, Topman
No big ceremony here. It’s a dark-colored (black, in Mr. Gosling’s case) T-shirt with a huge print.

Shoes, $485, Gucci
If you worry about blisters on your shoes or you stinking up the whole place once you remove your footwear, consider invisible socks. These are about as short as those disposable socks you use while shoe-shopping, only washable.

Bracelet, $12.50, American Eagle Outfitters
This jewelry’s optional, as Mr. Gosling himself isn’t wearing one. But put one on anyway—and pile ’em: They are having a fashion moment.

60 Second Style: Ryan Gosling

Ryan appears at a photocall for his movie, Drive, at the Cannes Film Festival. Besides the shirt looking a little like a pajama top, this outfit screams perfection. Correctly hemmed pants, excellent choice of accessories (a plain watch), and wonderful shoes.

Just to remove the top being mistaken for pajama ones, opt for one without the white piping.

Pants, $39.50, American Eagle Outfitters
There are no ifs or buts here. The pants have to be cut slim in order to pull of Gosling’s look.

Shoes, $49.99, Spring
Beautiful Gosling’s two-tone oxfords may be, for the average guy, there are not a lot of places that a shoe of that kind may be worn. These handsome lace-ups would do the trick just as well.

Watch, $95, Fossil
An outfit this pristine requires the most minimal of accessories, and whoever dressed Gosling knew what they were doing: Any more elaborate than this vintage watch would have ruined the look.

60 Second Style: Darren Criss

After the first 60 Second Style featuring Darren Criss came out, I received quite a few emails telling me more about the guy. To thank you for taking the time, I’m doing another one with Mr. Criss.
At such an attractive price, there’s no reason to not stock up on this spring-to-summer staple. Wear it by itself (with a strong antiperspirant if you sweat easily!) or over a tank top.
The thing with cashmere is, it would keep you warm on cold spring evenings, or cool you down during balmy summer nights. Trust, it would be worth the investment.
Yet another must-buy, and you shouldn’t feel guilty about getting these slim-fitting jeans in every imaginable wash the store offers.
The only two colors I draw the line on when it comes to the whole match-your-shoes-to-your-belt rule are brown and black. They are never meant to be worn together. If you’re wearing brown, at least try to match the shades as well.
Wear these sockless. Those who wear boat shoes with socks are tourists in a European country. And the locals are snickering.
